Trek Overview

About This Trek

Step into a forbidden kingdom frozen in time — the walled city of Lo Manthang and its surrounding desert canyons, cave monasteries, and ancient frescoes feel more like Tibet than Nepal. A restricted-permit trek through one of Asia's most surreal and culturally preserved landscapes.

Upper Mustang is a living museum, a rain-shadow desert of ochre cliffs, fluttering prayer flags, and centuries-old gompa where the old Lo-pa kingdom survives almost unchanged. Among the most visually dramatic and culturally profound treks in the Himalayas.

On the Trail

Teahouses & Local Hospitality

Rustic but authentic – bring a warm sleeping bag (-10°C). Expect basic rooms, shared bathrooms, and hearty dal bhat.

Accommodation
  • Kagbeni, Chele, Samar – basic teahouses, shared squat toilets
  • Lo Manthang – best on route, limited by walled city restrictions
  • Charging: NPR 300–500 per device (solar-limited, bring power bank)
  • Hot shower: available in some lodges (NPR 300–500 extra)
Food & Prices (NPR)
  • Dal Bhat (unlimited) – 500–800 NPR
  • Tibetan bread + eggs – 200–350 NPR
  • Noodles / Thukpa – 400–600 NPR
  • Boiled water – 100–200 NPR/L (treat further)
💧 Never drink tap water. Use purification tablets/filter or boiled water. The region is very dusty – bring a reusable bottle.
Packing List

Essential Gear for Upper Mustang

Dust is relentless – bring a buff/dust mask. Nights are freezing, even in spring.

Clothing
  • Down jacket (-10°C rating) – non-negotiable
  • Thermal base layers (2–3 sets) – NO cotton
  • Waterproof shell jacket & pants, fleece mid-layer
  • Dust mask/buff (critical – trails are very dusty!)
  • Trekking pants (2), wool socks (4–5 pairs), beanie, gloves
Gear & Health
  • Sleeping bag (comfort -10°C) + liner
  • Trekking poles, headlamp + spare batteries
  • Power bank (20,000+ mAh) – limited electricity
  • Water purification tablets/filter, water bottles (2L)
  • First aid: Diamox, ibuprofen, blister care, ORS, sunscreen SPF 50+
Altitude Awareness

Moderate AMS Risk at 3,800m+

Rapid ascent from Jomsom (2,720m) to Lo Manthang (3,840m) in 5–6 days – rest day essential.

Know AMS Signs

Headache, nausea, fatigue = mild. Vomiting, ataxia = descend 500m immediately.

Hydrate

Drink 3–4 liters of water daily. The desert climate is deceptive.

No Alcohol

Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills above 3,000m.

Insurance Mandatory

Must cover helicopter rescue up to 5,000m. Rescue from Mustang ~$3,500–5,000.

Diamox

125mg twice daily – start before Jomsom flight. Consult doctor.

Early Starts

Start trekking by 6–7 AM to avoid strong afternoon winds (common in Mustang).

Tibetan Buddhist Kingdom

Respecting Lo's Traditions

Upper Mustang retains a pure Tibetan Buddhist culture – ask before photos, walk clockwise, remove shoes.

Do's ✅
  • Greet with "Tashi Delek" (Tibetan welcome)
  • Walk clockwise around chortens, monasteries, mani walls
  • Ask permission before photographing people or monastery interiors
  • Remove shoes before entering monastery prayer halls
Don'ts ❌
  • Never point feet at people or religious objects
  • Don't touch monks' robes or move mani stones
  • Don't give money to begging children – donate to community schools
  • Don't litter – carry all waste back to Jomsom
♻️ Sustainable: Refill water, support local teahouses, use dust masks (reduce trail erosion from spitting?).
