Expert Advice

Important Tips for Trekkers

Lila's field knowledge – read before you go.

Thorong La Pass Day

Start at 4:00–5:00 AM from High Camp. Winds pick up after midday – crossing must be before noon.

Acclimatisation

Rest day in Manang (Day 7) is CRITICAL. Never skip. Drink 3–4 litres of water daily, walk slowly.

Cash & ATMs

ATMs available up to Manang; carry enough Nepali rupees for the second half. Jomsom has ATMs but may be unreliable.

Option: Drive Direct to Chame

Many trekkers now drive from Kathmandu to Chame (2,670 m) in 1–2 days to save time, skipping the lower villages.

Jomsom Specialties

Try the famous apple pie, apple brandy, and local apple products in Jomsom – a well‑deserved treat after the pass.

Travel Insurance

Must cover helicopter evacuation up to 5,500m. Rescue from Thorong Phedi / High Camp can cost $5,000+.
